National Housing Programme Portal: How to Apply for Nigeria Federal Government Houses
Nigerians can start applying for the low-cost houses built by the Federal Government.
This initiative is coordinated under the National Housing Programme to address the affordable housing challenges in the country.
The National Housing Programme is a development project that the government set to address the economic crisis in Nigeria. The housing deficit has been identified as one major challenge in West African countries.
In fact, according to a World Bank report, with Nigeria estimated population of about 150 million, additional 720,000 housing units are required each year to address its problem of housing deficit.
The report noted that based on an estimate of 9 dwelling units a year per 1,000 of the population, the projected housing units are not only to replace the decaying housing stock but also to meet the geometrically growing population and demand. And to avoid or prevent further housing crisis by 2020, the report added.
Now fast-forward to November 2021 when Federal Government launch the new scheme; Many Nigerians have been anxiously waiting for the National Housing Programme Portal to apply for housing. For now, 5000 housing units are readily available for the millions of Nigerians to buy from the federal government.
As a key player in the housing industry, Estate Code Nigeria Ltd has seen reason in guiding the interested applicants on the easy steps to apply for the housing programme. Having understood that, many people may not be familiar with the processes.
The formal launch of the portal, https://nhp.worksandhousing.gov.ng, which took place at the Conference Room of the ministry in Mabushi, Abuja, throws open the door for Nigerians to apply online to buy the available 5,000 plus housing units, ranging from 1, 2 to 3 bedroom bungalows and blocks of flats.
What do you need to apply for the house?
- Passport photograph: You will need to upload a digital copy of your most recent passport photograph for .JPEG or .PNG format.
- Current Tax Clearance/Pay Slip: You will also need to show the most recent copy of your tax clearance / Pay Slip certificate and upload it in PDF format only.
- Means of Identification (National I.D, Drivers licences, International passport ): Also upload digital copy of your means of identification in .JPEG or .PNG format
- Letter of recommendation from any Primary Mortgage Bank (for the Mortgage Subscribers)
- Evidence of 10% initial deposit. (for Mortgage Subscribers only)
The applicant must attain 18 years of age and also has a verifiable means of income before applying. He must also be a contributor to the National Housing Fund and comply with the terms and conditions of sales and complete the online application processes.
Easy steps to apply
- Visit https://nhp.worksandhousing.gov.ng/
- When you open the portal, the first step is to register on the website to allow you access to the list of the available houses for sale in every part of the country.
- After the registration, you will select the state where you want the property, then pick your choice of the house you want to buy. So, you will commence the application processes.
- Online Application: when you click on apply, you will be directed to another page where you will fill your personal information, Job information, then upload the above-mentioned documents, fill the property information and the declaration of age.
- Application Submission: Click on submit button to submit your application form.
- Application Fees: After successful submission of your online application for your choice of property, the next step is to make non-refundable payment of N10,000 (Ten Thousand Naira) application fee.
- Processing of Application: The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing will later review all the applications and only notify the successful applicants by sending them the payment authorization for the property they want to buy.
- Payment for Property: Once you receive payment authorization, the applicant is expected to either make outright payment or liaise with one Primary Mortgage Bank (PMB) for payment of the property. The property will be sold on first come for serve basis.
- Property Allocation: The ministry will finally give the successful applicant Letter of allocation.
It is also very important to inform the interested Nigerians that the portal has been opened on 12th November 2021, but the closing date has not been disclosed.
